Albums I’m Digging: Tha Carter III

CarterIIIEven though Lil’ Wayne is so hype these days, I wasn’t originally that impressed with Tha Carter III. A few of the songs on his bootleg-internet releases were real standouts, like Help or Smoke That Kush, but otherwise I wasn’t really sure what the big deal was all about.

(I first encountered Lil’ Wayne in the pages of The New Yorker in an article by Sasha Frere-Jones. Where else would I hear about the new trends in hip-hop?)

Tha Carter III is a lot more polished and interesting than the bootlegs. It’s a gripping and interesting listen. I’m not sure that I would rate it an 81 but still one of the most interesting albums of the year.
